folders, ring folders, presentation folders and the environment

Saturday, August 29th, 2009

As a responsible consumer, the effects that plastics and other materials have on the environment need to be considered. Many factors must be taken into account in the attempt to reduce the environmental burden on our planet.

All too often, the recyclability of the finished product is seen as the most important issue; however the total environmental impact from manufacture to recycling, is much more relevant and advantageous. This includes the complete life cycle of a product – from production to disposal. Whole of Life environmental impact.

It is known that the environmental effect of disposal plays only a small part, whereas the majority of the effect to the environment is caused during the manufacture of the product in the use of energy and the production of toxins. Recycling is important, but only an outcome – we first need to reduce the energy in production, then reuse before we recycle.

So, what characteristics are important for an environmentally sound material?

Firstly, the most lightweight product will deliver the least impact and consume the least amount of energy – KoDan Oz products are all lightweight – in fact they have a specific gravity of less than 1 – a small decrease in material weight per unit has a practical overall impact when dealing in large quantities. Due to the physical characteristics of polypropylene, a thinner, lightweight container, folder, binder or box, can be produced with excellent strength and rigidity. Compare that to say heavy cardboard – our materials use less energy to produce and certainly less energy to recycle than a heavy cardboard product.

A decrease in material weight, also directly relates to the transportation cost. The higher the cost to ship, the more impact on the environment – that is logic. For example, glass is readily recyclable and made from recyclable materials; however the weight of a sheet of glass increases the environmental effect. As noted earlier, KoDan Oz PP is a lightweight material, with a specific gravity of less than 1.

Also importantly, the manufacturing processes of materials can cause the greatest environmental burden. Originally by-products from oil, such as propylene and ethylene were burnt off into the environment - now propylene is converted to polypropylene. Polypropylene is made up from carbon and hydrogen and is manufactured without any dangerous emissions. There are no halogenated compounds, chlorine or heavy metals involved. This is in direct contrast to other plastics such as PVC, which is generally considered to have little environmental integrity due to the difficulty inherent in its recycling; and of course its heavy metals content. Consider that it is simply not possible to recycle a PVC ring binder – to give the PVC rigidity, it is wrapped around a heavy cardboard insert – this process makes recycling impossible!

An environmentally sound material must have a long working life. KoDan Oz PP products are resistant to water and most oils, greases and chemical products. It is extremely tough and durable. So, KoDan Oz PP is not only lightweight, but it has an exceptionally long life. The longer the life of the product, will again have a positive impact on its environmental integrity.

The handling of waste by recycling, incinerating or land filling is an important environmental issue. Our KDZ PP can be reused and recycled. Polypropylene is 100% recyclable. During recycling, polypropylene retains its strength. Recycled polypropylene does not down grade the inherent characteristics of the substrate. Further, most PP products can be quite easily granulated or crushed and put back through the thermoforming process. We have available PP material made from post industrial waste that is 100% recycled – samples available on request. In other words we can manufacture a stationery binder or folder made from 100% recycled materials!

(Even during incineration, no hazardous gases are emitted – only water vapour and carbon dioxide, which is readily converted by photosynthesis).

Here at KoDan Oz we encourage our products be returned to us for recycling.

It also should be noted, that our PP products can be disposed of in the standard blue recycle bins along with other recyclable plastics.

There is a national recycling code (a triangle with the number 5 inside and the letters “PP” underneath) which should be used whenever possible.

It is worth noting here that Planet Ark Direct – an organisation committed to the health of our planet, sells recyclable polypropylene bags.

ring binders and ring folders

Monday, August 24th, 2009

The idea that your ring binder or ring folder is just the binding device for your document is false. Sure, if the ring binder is going to sit on a shelf hidden deep within the bowels of your house, then maybe OK. But most ring binders and ring folders have another function; a very critical and often overlooked function. (That’s why the ring binder or ring folder is often the last cab off the rank when it comes to the development of an important document).

The function of your ring binder or ring folder is to communicate value and exclusivity. The value of the document and the fundamental value and exclusivity, of your brand and proposition.

Simple stuff isn’t it. Nothing complex about that at all.

Why then, do so many organizations simply buy ring binders and ring folders off the shelf? Because it’s convenient and quick to do so I guess, is the answer. So after a load of intellectual capital is spent developing the document, just 5 minutes is spent on sourcing a ring binder or ring folder to convey the documents value. Does not make sense at all does it?

At KoDan Oz we have the resources and the ideas to make certain your ring binder ring binder and ring folder will convey exclusivity and the value of your proposition.

Clip Folders Binders

Sunday, June 28th, 2009

Stationery Binders or stationery folders with metal rings or clips, are generally referred to as “ring binders’ or “ring folders”. The manufacturers of these stationery binders and folders, almost always refer to them as “ring binders” and the rings in the binder or folder as “ring metals” or “ring mechanisms”.

But users have lots of different names - clip folders, ring folders, paper binders, paper folders; and as most are made from plastic based materials, some users simply call them plastic folders or plastic binders. So what is correct?

What is correct, is what suits you the user. You can call them whatever you like, as long as your description is understood by others.

Marketing Collateral

Ring binders and presentation folders

Of all the material that supports sales and marketing functions, the most often neglected, and put off until the last minute to resolve, is the ring binder or presentation folder for sales and marketing (and training) documentation.

The intellectual effort that goes into marketing and sales documentation is generally huge! The effort and time involved in developing training programs is also enormous. And at the last minute the time normally taken to devise and design the presentation folder or binder, is not all that much.

Choosing presentation ring binders / ring folders.

Firstly, the ring binder must convey the value of the information within; whilst at the same communicate the nature, and the exclusivity of your business.

The ring binder must be the right format – if the document is an A4 document, as most are in Australia, then the ring binder needs to suit an A4 document; if the document is A5 or even A3, then the ring binder or ring folder needs to fit the document correctly.

Once the format has been decided, the size of the document itself needs to sorted out, so that the most suitable ring metal size and ring metal configuration can be selected.

The number of leaves in the document will determine the most suitable size ring metal for the ring binder or ring folder.

So often the integrity of a document is compromised by ill fitting ring binders and ring folders. Seek the advice of your supplier to establish the most suitable ring metal size.

Selecting a suitable material for your ring binders and ring folders

In Australia, it appears that the most used materials are now polypropylene or pvc for plastic ring binders and plastic ring folders.

Polypropylene is generally chosen because of its environmental integrity and its lightweight and modern appeal. PVC is chosen probably because it’s been the traditional substrate for ring binders and ring folders in Australia for many years. Both materials are generally good value. The big issue with pvc seems to be the problem of recycling and recyclability. PVC itself is recyclable – but in ring binder and ring folder form it is not recyclable because of the hard cardboard insert welded into the pvc cover material to provide rigidity for ring binders and ring folders. PVC material used in ring binders and folders is a very soft and pliable and full of plasticizers.
